Procedures performed in the Endoscopy Clinic
Procedures performed in St Andrew’s Endoscopy Clinic include:
Gastroscopy/Endoscopy: both paediatric and adults, inclusive of the balloon enteroscope, ERCP (endoscopic retrograde cholangiopancreatography) for gallstone removal, endoscopic ultrasound, and overstich procedures for gastric leaks
An upper endoscopy (also known as gastroscopy) is a procedure that enables your doctor to examine the lining of the upper part of your gastrointestinal tract—the oesophagus, stomach and duodenum (first portion of the small intestine)—using a thin flexible tube with its own camera.
Bronschoscopy: endo bronchial ultrasound (EBUS) with needle aspirate and lung biopsy; cryobiopsy; endobronchial lung volume reduction; endobronchial stents; and thermoplasty
A bronchoscopy is a procedure to look directly at the airways in the lungs using a thin, lighted tube (bronchoscope). The bronchoscope is put in the nose or mouth. It is moved down the throat and windpipe (trachea), and into the airways.
Colonoscopy: both paediatric and adults
A colonoscopy is a procedure where the Gastroenterologist (specialist doctor) looks at the inside of the large bowel (colon) using a special camera called a colonoscope. A mild general anaesthetic will usually be used for this procedure. The endoscope is a long flexible tube that has a light and a camera on the end of it.
Trans Oesophageal Echo (TOE)
A trans-oesophageal echocardiogram (TOE - also called an echo) is a procedure to look at your heart chambers and valves using a flexible telescope placed down your oesophagus (gullet). The telescope has an ultrasound scanner attached to it so your heart specialist can get close-up views of your heart.
