Cardiac surgery refers to a range of surgical procedures designed to treat heart conditions that cannot be effectively managed with medications or non-invasive treatments. These surgeries are performed to correct structural problems with the heart, repair or replace damaged heart valves, treat coronary artery disease, and manage heart failure.

Cardiothoracic surgery

Heart bypass surgery / coronary artery bypass graft

Heart bypass surgery, also known as coronary artery bypass grafting, uses a healthy blood vessel from the chest or leg area to create a new pathway for blood to flow around a blocked artery in the heart.
Heart valve replacement or repair

Traditionally, open-heart surgery has been used for heart valve replacement or repair. A large incision is made in the chest and heart stopped for a short time so the surgeon can repair or replace the valves. Alternative, less invasive techniques are offered by our Structural Heart Program team where clinically appropriate.
Aortic aneurysm repair

During this surgery, the aneurysm is exposed through dissection of the chest, and the damaged portion of the aorta is removed and replaced with a synthetic tube or graft.
Atrial Fibrillation Maze procedure

Maze surgery treats electrophysiological problems such as atrial fibrillation by creating a pattern, or maze, of scars in the upper chambers of the heart. The scar tissue effectively blocks the faulty electrical signals that cause irregular heartbeats.
Atrial Fibrillation Hybrid Ablation Convergent Procedure

A Convergent Procedure is a type of Maze procedure that combines surgical and catheter-based approaches to treat atrial fibrillation. It involves making small incisions in the chest to access the heart's atria, while a catheter is used to insert an ablation device that creates a pattern of scar tissue to disrupt faulty electrical signals in the heart. It is a less invasive option than a surgical Maze procedure.
Pericardectomy

Pericardectomy is the surgical removal of the pericardium, the membrane that surrounds the heart. It is used to treat constrictive pericarditis, which is when the pericardium becomes stiff.
