Choose St Andrew’s Emergency Centre in a heart emergency
A cardiac emergency can occur suddenly, and recognising the signs and symptoms early is crucial to ensuring a timely and effective response. At St Andrew’s we have teams specialising in cardiac emergencies and our Emergency Centre is available 24/7.
What to do in a cardiac emergency
If you are experiencing chest pains or heart attack symptoms, don’t hesitate to call 000 and ask the Ambulance Service to bring you to St Andrew’s Emergency Centre.
On arrival, you will be assessed by an experienced emergency nurse, called a triage nurse, who will review your symptoms. You will then be seen by a doctor. If required, admission to St Andrew’s War Memorial Hospital can be arranged directly from St Andrew’s Emergency Centre.
Heart attack symptoms
A cardiac emergency involves any acute condition that impacts the heart’s ability to function properly. Common signs of a heart attack include:
- Chest pain or discomfort: Often described as a pressure, tightness, or aching in the chest.
- Shortness of breath: Difficulty breathing or feeling winded even with minimal activity.
- Light-headedness or dizziness: A feeling of faintness or nausea.
- Pain in the arm, back, neck, jaw, or stomach: These pains may accompany chest discomfort.
- Sweating or cold sweat: Particularly when not physically exerting.
- Nausea or vomiting: These symptoms can often be overlooked but are serious indicators of a heart issue.
Signs of a heart attack in women may be different, with women often experiencing a heart attack without chest pressure. Instead, they may experience shortness of breath, pressure or pain in the lower chest or upper abdomen (which can feel like stomach pain), dizziness, light-headedness or fainting, upper back pressure or pain and extreme fatigue.
If you or someone near you experiences any of these symptoms, seek emergency medical attention immediately. Quick intervention can significantly reduce the risk of life-threatening complications.
