Dr Karl Poon is an interventional cardiologist, with a special interest in structural heart disease interventions, including
Transcatheter Aortic Valve Implant (TAVI), valvuloplasty, ASD, PDA and PFO closure. Dr Poon graduated as Dux of Melbourne Grammar School in 1995, and completed his medical degree from the University of Melbourne in 2001. He then undertook cardiology training at St Vincent’s Hospital Melbourne, Royal Hobart Hospital and Royal Melbourne Hospital.
He underwent another two years of high volume interventional cardiology training at the Prince Charles Hospital. He went onto his third year of interventional training as a senior structural fellow at William Beaumont Hospital, Michigan, USA; which remains a teaching center for structural heart disease interventions such as WATCHMAN and MitraClip.
Together with Dr Alex Incani, Karl set up the first private TAVI program at St Andrew's Hospital in July 2015, one of the most successful programs in Australia with best in class results.
He is a TAVI proctor and specializes in multiple valve types, is experienced in all manners of complex coronary interventions. He has published over 30 peer reviewed articles, authored 5 book chapters, and presented at major international meetings. Dr Poon’s current research focuses on the next phase of TAVI, the marriage of imaging modalities in TAVI and the optimizing of valve choices based on individual patient factor.
Dr Poon is a staff specialist at The Prince Charles Hospital, performs coronary and structural interventions at St Andrew’s Hospital, and continues to perform high volume TAVIs at St Andrew’s Hospital.
