As National Volunteer Week comes to an end, we feature another of our wonderful volunteers.
Jenny has been volunteering at St Andrew’s for 11 years – her regular job at the hospital is ward visiting:
“We visit patients for a chat, especially patients who are in for some time and are maybe from the country or don’t have many visitors. We help keep them entertained and active.”
“St Andrew’s is a great place to be involved as the staff are helpful and respectful to the volunteers. I like meeting lots of people and I enjoy cheering people up!”
Jenny has also volunteered with the Pyjama Foundation for over ten years. The organisation runs a program called ‘Love of Learning’ where volunteers are matched with a child in care, and spend an hour a week on learning activities.
Jenny has worked with the same child for ten years! And explains that as well as the learning program, she has helped with getting involved in cooking, gardening and other everyday things that many of us take for granted.
In closing Jenny adds:
“My mother always said to me that you only get out of life, what you put into it. Some of us are very lucky to have the life we do, it’s nice to be able to give back.”
