From welcoming patients when they arrive to offering a friendly smile and support on the wards, volunteers at St Andrew’s have many different roles. But did you know about St Andrew’s ‘virtual volunteers’?
Liz joined the St Andrew’s volunteer team in 2021 and is one of a small group who support the hospital from home.
“I applied to become a volunteer at St Andrew’s and I was so excited, but at the same time I began having severe foot pain and I realised I wouldn’t be able to stand up for many hours on the shift,” Liz said.
“That’s when I found out I could help from home, by doing what I love, sewing!
“I make soft toys for young patients and drawstring bags which are used for our breast care packs and the toiletry care packs given to patients who come to hospital unexpectedly.”
Liz spends hours every week sewing these special items for patients as well as many other gifts which are sold at volunteer fundraising stalls.
“I’m sewing all the time and I just love it! I’m also fortunate to have a group of friends who help by donating lots of different fabrics to me, that helps me to keep going,” Liz said.
“It gives me great pleasure that the patients enjoy receiving what I have sewn. This is my way to give back!”
