UnitingCare Health’s 2014 Helena Goldie Project Team has been forced to postpone their trip to the Solomon Islands due to the devastation and flooding that has hit the island nation.
Rev Helen Dick said the flooding on Guadalcanal is severe, infrastructure has been destroyed, thousands are homeless and the death toll is rising.
She said although flooding has not affected Munda where the Helena Goldie Hospital and College of Nursing is located, UnitingCare has decided to postpone the trip due to safety concerns.
The team was scheduled to leave today on the first of two trips this year to help improve healthcare in the Solomon Islands.
The visit has now been rescheduled for June/July.
''We ask staff to keep the people of the Solomons in their thoughts and/or prayers as they rebuild their lives,'' Rev. Dick said.
