After months of construction, the highly anticipated Wesley Day Treatment Unit is open for business.
Located conveniently on Level 2 of the main hospital building, the unit administers various treatments, given over several hours, in a new purpose-built facility.
Operating Monday to Friday, it offers 13 bays with well-padded electronic recliner chairs/beds to enhance patient comfort. During the visit, free Wifi, iPads and refreshments are available.
The service, formerly in 3W in the west wing, is near the admissions desk making it easily accessible for patients.
Logan resident Deborah Littman has received treatment for her chronic immune condition at the hospital for more than a decade.
"When you have to return month after month for treatment over a period of years like I have, it can become very time consuming," she said. "Easy access becomes an important factor.
"I've been coming to the Wesley for over 10 years because I know the service is excellent and appreciate the level of care I receive from the team."
Wesley Treatment Unit Clinical Nurse Manager Sue Leonard said the unit's close proximity to specialist clinical services, including Oncology and Neurology, enabled patients to receive all their treatment at the one site.
It had also led to more efficient care because patients could begin their required treatments earlier, thus potentially reducing the need to stay overnight.
"This is much more convenient for the patient and much less stressful," Sue said. "We are very flexible and try hard to accommodate patients so that it does not impact on their daily lives too much".
Sue said the unit provided treatments including chemotherapy regimens administered by specialist oncology nurses, blood transfusions, other specialist infusions which require day-only admission, and urology treatments also not requiring a ward bed.
Patients needing to stay overnight, or requiring weekend treatment, were admitted to the hospital.
"We also offer education to new patients undergoing chemotherapy and treatments for other chronic illnesses, " she said.
The Wesley Day Treatment Unit is open Monday-Friday, 7am-3.30pm. To make an appointment contact the Day Treatment Unit team on 07 3232 7967.
The Wesley offers the most comprehensive range of services in a private hospital in Queensland, particularly for patients with cancer.
