Celebrating 60 years of care at St Andrew’s War Memorial Hospital

20-05-2018

This weekend St Andrew’s War Memorial Hospital in Spring Hill will celebrate 60 years of providing excellence in care to Queenslanders and acknowledge its rich history and unique connection to the community.

In recognition of this significant milestone, a commemorative service will be held on Saturday 19 May with key dignitaries including The Governor of Queensland, His Excellency the Honourable Paul de Jersey AC, Everald Compton AM (St Andrew’s first General Manager), Stan Mellick OAM ED and Reverend David Baker, Moderator, Queensland Synod, Uniting Church in Australia.

UnitingCare Queensland Chief Executive Officer Craig Barke said the milestone was a significant achievement for the hospital which has a special place in the heart of many Queenslanders.

"St Andrew’s has a deep connection for many Queenslanders and this weekend’s events are a celebration of the proud history of the hospital and acknowledgement of those who worked tirelessly to establish the hospital all those years ago.

"Since opening its doors in 1958, St Andrew’s has come a long way and is now leading the way in innovative medical procedures and pioneering significant surgical breakthroughs.

"From conducting the first open heart surgery in a private hospital in Queensland, St Andrew’s continues to excel in providing first class treatment and world class results," said Mr Barke.

In 2018, St Andrew’s became among the first hospital in Australia to complete two complex cardiac surgical techniques, the Impella and MitraClip procedure, which complements previous pioneering advancements over the years, such as the Transcatheter Aortic Valve Implantation (TAVI).

The 60th anniversary celebration will feature a performance by University of Queensland’s Emmanuel College Highlanders and commemorative addresses by Reverend David Baker, Moderator, Queensland Synod, Uniting Church in Australia, dignitaries and hospital executives.

Previous staff and nurses will reunite at a special reunion luncheon on Sunday 20 May at the Hotel Grand Chancellor, Brisbane.
